This needed enzyme is known as Cyclic Guanosine Monophosphate (cGMP). By stopping the PDE-5 from reducing the levels of cGMP, Viagra makes it easier for a man to maintain and sustain an erection with the assistance of sexual stimulation.

Sildenafil was discovered by a group of Pfizer’s chemists who were trying to discover cures for hypertension and angina pectoris at their labs in England. After the first round of clinical trials, the drug’s impact on angina pectoris was found to be minimal. However, some of the participants did experience erections despite suffering from erectile dysfunction. Additional trials were conducted with this focus and led to the drug’s approval.

Until 2002, Pfizer held the patent on PDE-5 inhibitors. The court ruled that such a patent was not legal; this opened the door to competitors Levitra and Cialis, two other ED treatments which work in similar ways.
